The database contains works acted on or intended for the stage, which are either wholly or predominantly in prose. Dramatic works wholly or predominantly in verse appear in English Verse Drama: the Full-Text Database. In addition to plays, English Prose Drama includes masques, entertainments, and certain closet dramas. The database includes both original works and adaptations and translations.
The choice of editions has been made under the guidance of the Editorial Board. Generally, the first authorized edition of each play has been used, except in cases where authorial revision or enlargement renders a later edition preferable.
The entire text of each prose drama is included. Any accompanying text written by the playwright and forming an integral part of the work, such as epigraphs, dramatis personae and notes, is generally also included, along with commendatory and prefatory poems by both the playwright and others.
